Is wireless interference causing your system issues?

Written by Admin | 24 Oct 2022, 12:22:45

Are you experiencing connection issues with your wireless system? Did you know it could be interference which is causing your issues?

Wi-Fi is a great and convenient technology, but it comes with its pits falls in terms of reliability. In the Ideal world every veterinary practice would have a room built for X-ray only, with no other Wi-Fi enabled electronic devices in the same room. We know fine well this is not applicable for most vet practices and the x-ray room is used for multiple different procedures, all in which usually involves a device that is Wi-Fi enabled. Not only medical devices but some practices have cordless phones, Wireless Access Points, Blood analysis to name a few.

The problem with all these Wi-Fi enabled devices that they all use the same frequencies, and this is where the interference becomes an issue. When a wireless device supports dual band and Bluetooth and is enabled but not connected this interface is always scanning looking for devices to connected to which also cause interference.

There are usually 3 types of wireless frequencies to be aware of:

2.4GHz – long range frequency

5GHz – Shot Length frequency, more reliable

* Wi-Fi capable devices nowadays are dual band meaning they support 2.4ghz and 5ghz

Bluetooth – short range frequency

2.4GHz - Is the most widely used Wi-Fi frequency utilized by Wi-Fi capable devices. It is a long-range frequency that offers a larger coverage area or wider signal coverage.

5GHz - Is the newest Wi-Fi frequency offered as the dual band connections. 5GHz is known as a short-range frequency with less area covered and less signal coverage.

Bluetooth – Is also known as a short-range wireless technology and operates on the 2.4GHz frequency

The problem with having so many wireless capable devices in the same room is that they all omit EMF (Electromagnetic Field) which causes interference. Interference causes Intermittent connectivity or unexpected disconnects, Delays in connection and data transfer, Slow network speeds, and poor signal strength.

Devices that cause interference:

  • Cordless Phones
  • Wireless Access Points
  • Wi-Fi enabled Blood Analysis
  • Wireless Ultrasound
  • Mobile Phones
  • Multiple Wi-Fi networks
  • Bluetooth Devices

Please if you are thinking of implementing a new wireless X-ray system that you are aware of the possible issues that arise with having multiple wireless devices in the same room.

If you currently have a wireless X-ray system which is experiencing any of the issues highlighted, then please contact IMV and we will be happy to help.
